Emco's legal department is a team of enthusiastic individuals who are dedicated to meeting and exceeding the needs of the customers we serve. We are looking for an Associate General Counsel who would be an integrated and strategic business partner and trusted legal advisor to Emco’s Profit Centres across Canada, its National Support Centre, and its Leadership Team.
The ideal candidate is bilingual, is a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario and has at least 5 years’ experience in corporate and commercial law.
Job Description
Salary Range of $125,000 to $150,000 plus profit sharing.
The successful candidate would join Emco’s existing legal team who are responsible for providing a full range of legal advice on a wide variety of topics including leasing, commercial agreements, terms and conditions, corporate governance, general corporate/commercial issues, employment matters, immigration, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, privacy, competition and regulatory laws, environmental questions, health and safety, workers compensation, and ethics.
The key attributes of the successful candidate include understanding the needs of diverse interests throughout the company, the ability to support a multi-location environment, strong drafting, and negotiation skills, being self-motivated, having exceptional communication and training skills, providing proactive and objective legal and business advice, and the ability to effectively manage competing priorities.

Duties and responsibilities of the role include:
- Legal and business advisor to Emco’s Profit Centres, advising on all legal matters in both French and English.
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of complex contracts, leases, policies, terms and conditions, purchase and sale documents and other agreements.
- Monitoring, interpreting, advising, and training on legislative and regulatory developments.
- Consulting and supervising outside counsel.
- Business focused, aligning the business objectives, programs, and systems to Emco’s strategies, policies, Code of Ethics, and core values.
- Building an environment that supports strong, cohesive working relationships with Profit Centre Managers, Region Managers and National Support Centre.
- Assisting internal auditors on controls and health and safety matters.
Educational Requirements:
- Law degree – LLB or JD
- Admission to the Bar of the Law Society of Ontario
- Strong oral and written proficiency in French
- Minimum of five years’ experience in corporate and commercial law.
- In house counsel experience is an asset.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to explain the practical application of the law to others.
- Strong drafting and negotiation skills.
- Good judgment.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands and to manage multiple initiatives at one time.
- Ability to work both in teams and independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong leadership and creative thinking.
